Abstract:
Examines the ambivalence that characterized women's political power and considers the marginalization of women in the political decisionmaking process in Austria in the 19th and 20th centuries. Women were in principle entitled to vote at local and provincial levels from around the mid-19th century, but were mostly denied the political power of a personal vote, while political parties feared their enfranchisement would aid their opponents. Many women also saw involvement in politics as too radical, and the social-democratic camp was split on the issue. Full suffrage came in 1918, but the middle classes were again ambivalent. Democracy was suspended after 1933, and during the Nazi period, but a dualist attitude toward gender in politics continued after 1945. A major break occurred from the 1970's, with the new feminist movement that raised the subject of public discrimination and other issues, but various factors continued to limit women's parliamentary representation and the promotion of feminist interests. The importance of the female vote was highlighted by several issues in 1994, but marginalization remained a problem.
